My name is Sydney Wolaver and my life has been forever changed by the work being accomplished at United Against Poverty. I came in for the first time in September of 2018, looking for information about the Bike Walk program. I left that day not only enrolled in the bike program but also signed up to start STEP the following morning. I did not know then the impact that one visit would have on my life.

United Against Poverty became the one guaranteed bright spot in my life, which was otherwise filled with chaos. At the time I had lost my job, my apartment, my money, and most everything I owned due to alcohol and drug abuse. I was in a dark and scary place and wondered if I would ever be able to get out and have a life worth living again. At that point, I was about a month clean and I wanted to live a life where I would not have to worry about where I was going to live or get my next meal. I simply had no idea how to go about it.

The beautiful thing about this program is that they are willing and able to meet with each participant to access where they are and where they want to go. I am always welcomed with open arms by people who know me and my situation, while being encouraged and supported to work towards my goals. I have learned about how to dress for and nail an interview, how to write an impressive resume, how to start saving and living on a budget, as well as the importance of taking things one day at a time and living a life full of integrity and honesty. I am working as a cashier at Publix and it feels great to have a steady source of income. I have a car and put money in my saving account every pay period. I also recently celebrated six months clean and sober! With the help of my Success Coach, I am putting in applications for apartments and will have my own place soon. I seriously could not be where I am now without Kelly, she has believed in me since the day we met and encourages me to dream big, because I am capable of accomplishing whatever I put my heart and mind into.

Truly the work United Against Poverty does changes lives for the better each and every day and is a vital resource in this community.  If I had not had access to this support, I do not know what my life would be like today.
